Sit-in against land mafia, Larkana police

LARKANA: Members of the Soomra Community held a demonstration here on Friday against the land mafia and the police, demanding protection and justice.

A sit-in was staged at the Jinnah Bagh Chowk where 10 women, including Habiban, Afia, Fatima, Azizan, Perveen, Aisha, Manzooran and Aalia, and 16 children protested outside the town hall, blocking the road and suspending traffic for hours.

The protesters of Murad Wahan Mohalla, Larkana, said that their 2,700-square-feet property in Lahori Mohalla had been occupied by a land mafia representative Saeed Soomro. They said that Soomro had threatened them through different sources and even registered a false case against their family heads, putting them in jail.

The protesters alleged that the law minister was supporting the land mafia representative, forcing them to withdraw from the ownership of the plot and refusing to compensate for the property. They appealed to chief justice of Pakistan, President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani, Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah, provincial police officers, regional police officer, the DIGP and DPO Larkana to provide them justice and take legal action against the corrupt police officials and the land mafia representative.

Journalists protest against attitude of Provincial Building Director

LARKANA: March 27, 2010. Journalists Community in Larkana on Saturday protested against the unfair attitude and misbehave by the XEN Provincial Building and Project Director for the Development Schemes in Larkana and Chairman Board Intermediate and Secondary Education Larkana.

A large number of Journalists including photojournalists have strictly condemned the rude behavior and threats to the media persons during performing their duties. Senior media representatives including Nazir Siyal, Imtiaz Ali, Qazi Aijaz, Ghulam Sarwer, Badal Mallah, G. R, Mohammad Ali Behleem, Tariq Ali, Mukhtiar Mirani, Abid Ali, Mehdi Shah, and others strictly condemned XEN Provincial High Ways Shabir Ahmed Panhiyar and Chairman Larkana Board for threaten the media persons.

Journalists while expressing their notions, they said that the above officials should be immediately removed and investigating should be made against their corruption in Larkana. Project Director Development works and Chairman Board harsh attitude against the media persons is not acceptable media persons said.

Journalists community has appealed President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister of Pakistan Mr. Gillani, MNA Faryal Talpur, Chief Minister Sindh government to take immediate action against the culprits and protect the media persons. They also have demanded for the enquiry into the development works in Larkana all the facts will be surfaced they said.

Sindh to get 6 cadet colleges including two for girls’

KARACHI: Four cadet colleges are being established in Ghotki, Dadu, Gadap and Kandhkot, besides two girls’ cadet colleges in Nawabshah and Larkana, Sindh Education Secretary Rizwan Memon told a meeting presided over by Education Minister Pir Mazharul Haq on Friday.

Presently, Sindh has four cadet colleges in Petaro, Sanghar, Larkana and Pano Aqil, the secretary said. Brig Asif Akhtar and Col Akhtar Ahmed Khalili also attended the meeting. Haq assured that the Sindh Education and Literacy Department would continue extending cooperation to the armed forces for establishing cadet colleges.

Ad hoc lecturers: Separately, Haq has directed the concerned authorities to send the cases of such ad hoc lecturers who could not submit their original testimonials for certain reasons or could not appear for interview earlier for being out of country to the Sindh Public Service Commission for an interview.

Benazir Income Support Programme launched

LARKANA: Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah along with Federal Minister and Benzair Income Support Programme (BISP) ChairwomanFarzana Raja launched the support programme on Tuesday at Garhi Khuda Buksh.

Shah spoke at the occasion, saying that it was Benazir’s dream and mission to support the poor women in Pakistan.

He said with the launching of the BISP a check of Rs 2,000 would be delivered to destitute women every two months.

He said Benazir’s dream that the women of Pakistan are financially looked after would be realised with this programme. An estimated 5.5 million poor women would benefit from the programme every month throughout the country, he said. Shah went on to say that the BISP was launched on of President Asif Ali Zardari’s orders.

Youth training: The chief minister said 18,000 educated youth were being trained in different trades in the province of Sindh, and were being paid between Rs 3,000 to 7,000 every month. He said that after they complete their training there would be job opportunities for them both in Pakistan and abroad.

Shah said that poor women would also be provided with developed land. A loan for fertilisers and tractors would be provided to farmers so the per acre yield increases.

He said women’s role in society would increase after they get agriculture land in their names.

BISP Chairperson Farzana Raja also spoke at the occasion and said the needs of the women who are destitute would be traced using the information at local NADRA offices and verifying their computerised identity cards. She said the cheques of money from the programme would then be delivered to their doorsteps.

Benazir Bhutto's death anniversary to be observed on Dec. 27

The second death anniversary of former Pakistani Prime Minister Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Shaheed will be observed on Dec. 27 across the country, the official news agency APP reported Monday.

Pakistan's Presidential Spokesman Farhatullah Babar said programs are being chalked out for the death anniversary of Benazir Bhutto and the final decision would be made shortly, keeping in view the prevailing law and order situation.

There will be a main mourning gathering at Benazir Bhutto's final resting place in Garhi Khuda Bux, near Larkana, a city in the northwest of Sindh Province.

The ruling Pakistan People's Party, other political parties, civil society and lawyers would attend the mourning sessions and pay rich tribute to the life and achievements of the slain leader.

Benazir Bhutto was assassinated on Dec. 27, 2007 following an electioneering rally at Liaqat Bagh park in Rawalpindi, a garrison city adjoining the federal capital Islamabad.

According to PPP's leadership, the government would ensure maximum security for the visitors at Garhi Khuda Buxas. The government has also decided to build a monument at Liaqat Bagh on the second death anniversary to remember Benazir Bhutto.

Development works in Larkana halted after bogus payments to contractors

LARKANA: October 7, 2009. Government Contractors have halted road development work under the Larkana Development Package due to non payment of outstanding amount Rs. 60 to 70 crores, in spite the funds release against the ongoing development work; the authorities had disbursed bogus payments to their favorite contractors in fiscal year 2008-09.

The contractors in the press conference held here at Larkana Press Club, claimed that the EDO Works and Services department Kamber-Shahdadkot Imdad Ali Magsi, District Officer Roads along with Coordination Officer Zahid Hussain Memon, EDO and other concerned officials alleged in the bogus payments and corruption of ADP yearly funds Rs. 250 crore.

The Contractors claimed that the above officials have embezzled millions of misappropriation in the name of re-appropriation and M& R of roads around the Kamber-Shahdakot and Larkana. They said total of amount Rs. 13.5 Arab (billions) allocated for LDP out of Rs. 120 crore (billions) were used, while 800 millions were lapse in June 2009 they told.

They said the ADP budget 2008-09 could not be used properly and misused funds by the concerned authorities in the constituency of Shaheed Benazir Bhutto, in this connection they have also submitted a brief complaint to the President of Pakistan, Chief Minister Sindh, Secretary Works and Services, Anti-corruption and other authorities to take action and enquiry against the culprits they said.

Contractors President Manzoor Soomro, Niaz Hussain Mirani, Ajeet Kumar, Khan Bahadur Abro, Hidayatullah Bhatti, Atta Mohammed and others were present in the press conference.

Online motor registration starts in Larkana

LARKANA - Sindh Minister for Excise and Taxation Mukesh Chawla said that the present government promoted
400 employees of the department through DPC and to improve the performance of the department, more
appointments have been made.
Remaining promotions will be given to employees of the department on merit basis within one month through
DPC, he said while addressing the inaugural ceremony of Motor Registration Online System at Old Excise and
Taxation Office here Monday. The minister said that the new system is being extended to other parts of the
province on which an amount of Rs 14crors is being spent. He said that all the vehicles of Larkana region would
be registered at Larkana and no one will have to go to Karachi. Soon the property tax system will also be
computerized here, he said.
Chawala said that he will try his best to provide buildings to Excise and Taxation Department, and in this regard
the summery will be submitted to the chief Minister for approval.
He said that with the efforts of the department 35% more tax was collected so far against the target given to the
department. He directed to the officers to behave with the people in a polite way and solve their problems
without any delay. On the occasion secretary Excise and Taxation Mohsin Haqani, special Secretary Manzoor
Ahmad Memon, Director General Shoaib Ahmad was present.
Director, Excise and Taxation Larkana Ahmad Hussain Solangi welcomed the Minister and highlighted the
performance of the officials of the department in Larkana region.
Later, Minister visited Larkana Press Club and announced the amount Rs1 lac for the press club from his own
pocket.

Larkana Development Authority revived

The Sindh Assembly unanimously passed a bill to revive Larkana Development Authority (LDA) with an amendment moved by Munawar Abbasi MPA for including three MPAs in the LDA, with one being its vice chairman.

Munawar Abbasi advocated for initiating a master plan for Larkana and other districts of the province. He said that sufficient budget should be earmarked for the LDA.
Talking about the objectives of the bill, Sindh Law Minister Muhammad Ayaz Soomro said that the past regime winded up LDA because of political reasons. He said that the LDA was being revived to provide shelter to the people. He said that the LDA would construct houses for the poor people.

Tauqeer Fatima Bhutto recalled that Z.A. Bhutto had established the LDA in 1974. She added that poor infrastructure in Larkana created an image problem and hoped that the city would be uplifted with the revival of LDA.

New admission policy for medical colleges announced

The Sindh government, with the approval of Chief Minister Sindh Syed Qaim Ali Shah and in consultation with coalition parties, announced the admission policy for medical colleges/universities in the province on Saturday.

Under the new policy, all reciprocal seats have been abolished and instead 45 seats have been reserved in two Dow University of Medical and Health Sciences and Sindh Medical College for the students of interior Sindh. Similarly, 20 seats have been reserved for students of Karachi in institutions of interior Sindh. Out of 45 seats, 12 seats have been allocated for students of the Hyderabad Board and 11 seats each have been allocated for students of Sukkur, Larkana and Mirpurkhas Boards.

Rs 2 billion subsidy on flour, says Sindh CM

LARKANA: Chief Minister Sindh Syed Qaim Ali Shah has said that an amount of Rs. two billion subsidy under the Ramazan Package is being provided on flour throughout the province.

The 10 kg flour bag was being provided ar fixed rate Rs. 100. The ministers and advisers will supervise the distribution of atta in their respective areas so that the sugar can be provided on Utility Stores at fixed price Rs. 38 per kg while in open market, sugar will be sold at Rs 45 per kg. The chief minister said that 1,000 low cost houses will be constructed all over Sindh, hence, 500 houses each in Larkana/ Badin districts were being constructed and 40 houses were being constructed in Union Council Pir Bux Bhutto in Garhi Khuda Bux Bhutto in order to provide the same houses to poor people.

In this regard, the govt land is available, then construction work will be started. The chief minister said that in hoarding case 50,000 fine will be imposed by magistrates and imprisonment will be given for six months.

He said that it will be ensured that the essential commodities of daily use were sold at fixed price, meanwhile, black marketing will not be tolerated at any cost and the quantity/requirement of Atta for every district will be increased accordingly.

On the occasion, District Coordination Officer, Larkana, Mohammad Jaffar Abbasi briefed the chief minister that at present 27,000 kg of sugar was available in Larkana. Provincial ministers Mohammad Ayaz Soomro, Agha Siraj Durani and Manzoor Ahmed Waan were also present on the occasion.
